Cabbage is the second most popular vegetable after potatoes in summer cottages. Depending on the region of cultivation, care and planting dates for this crop may vary. For example, in the Moscow Region, climatic conditions are very different from Siberian or North Caucasian, which affects the technology of growing vegetables in open ground.
How to choose a variety of cabbage for Moscow region
The climate near Moscow is characterized by an abundance of cloudy days (there are almost twice as many as absolutely clear ones) and a temperate continental climate. The large distance from large reservoirs and the absence of elevations allows air masses to easily move around the region, making the air temperature more or less constant. Nevertheless, Seasonality in the Moscow Region is quite pronounced. These features must be taken into account when selecting cabbage seeds for planting on seedlings or immediately in open ground.
So, the best varieties for this region must meet the following requirements:
- Resistant to sudden changes in temperature and humidity.
- Undemanding to heat and sunlight.
- Those who give the crop no later than mid-October (mid-late, early and mid-early).
These requirements are equally applicable to varieties of cauliflower and cabbage. In general, to give preference to summer residents of the Moscow region should be bred specifically for the Moscow region climatic conditions (zoned).
How to care for early cabbage
Varieties of White Cabbage
White cabbage is planted earlier than other varieties, since it has a higher resistance to short-term temperature drops. In this case, seedlings can be grown independently or purchased in finished form (the second option is less welcome by summer residents, since it is possible to change the variety).
The most popular among gardeners of the Moscow Region are considered early, medium-term ripening and medium-late varieties.
|Grade||Ripening time||Description (grade features)|
|Dumas||Early||Heads up to 4 kg, dense. Shade tolerant, rot resistant|
|Glory||Medium late||Heads up to 4 kg, do not crack, dense and juicy|
|Valentine||Medium late||Very productive grade with a head of cabbage up to 8 kg|
|Dawn||Early||Very large heads of cabbage reach a mass of 9-11 kg|
|Aggressor||Medium late||Head of cabbage average, good taste, weighing up to 5.5 kg|
|Present||Medium late||The mass of heads of cabbage is from 2.5 to 4.5 kg. Does not crack or rot|
|Crumont||Medium late||Heads of cabbage up to 4.5-5 kg, do not crack and are not affected by vascular rot and fusarium|
In most cases, summer residents prefer co-cultivation of all of these varieties. In this case, the harvest is gradual, and there is enough cabbage for preparation of preparations, for consumption "from the garden", and for maintaining a sufficient amount of vegetables for consumption fresh in winter.
Varieties of cauliflower
Cauliflower is more tender and resistant to temperature changes, so it is recommended to plant it a little later than white cabbage. Even with appropriate agricultural technology and hardening, it can withstand temperature drops of up to 2-4 degrees, and the temperature from 15 to 18 degrees above 0 is considered optimal for its growth.
The best varieties of cauliflower for the Moscow Region are considered early and ultra-early, with a ripening period from the moment of sowing seeds for seedlings no more than 95 days.
|Grade name||Ripening time||Features|
|Alpha||Early||It forms very large heads weighing up to one and a half kg. It does not tolerate transportation very well; it is stored for no more than 1.5 months.|
|Warranty||Early||The mass of tight heads reaches 850 g. Resistant to scattering of heads.|
|Mushroom early||Early||Very tasty heads weighing up to 700 g. It differs in some friability of inflorescences. Suitable for greenhouse cultivation, resistant to slight shading|
|Movir 74||Early||The mass of tight aligned heads is up to 0.5 kg. It has good taste and light shading tolerance.|
|Express||Early||Small heads weighing no more than 500 g. The variety is resistant to bacteriosis|
|Early maturing||Early||The heads are characterized by high density and juiciness. Medium Disease Resistance|
|Snowball||Mid early||The heads are large, up to 1.2 kg! Easily tolerates cooling, disease resistance is above average|
The listed varieties of cauliflower are universal. They are good in fresh vegetable salads, in pickles and pickles. They are also used for making soups, casseroles and side dishes.
Dates of planting cabbage for seedlings and planting in the ground
It is recommended to sow white cabbage in the Moscow Region 1.5-2 months before placing it in a permanent place, that is, in the ground. Ideal dates for this are the end of April. Cauliflower and white cabbage seeds are recommended to be pickled in advance with a solution of potassium permanganate or another agent with disinfection properties (phytosporin, for example).
Seedlings are planted in the soil after significant warming and heating of the soil to a depth of at least 30-40 cm:
- without covering with a film or covering material - beginning or middle of June;
- under the film (short-term shelter) - the end of May, the beginning of June.
In the presence of warm beds, cabbage, especially early cabbage, can be planted by direct sowing in the ground under temporary shelters from the film. In the suburbs this should be done from mid-May. The best varieties for this method of planting are early and super early. Summer residents also note that in this way you can get a double crop of cauliflower for harvesting.

Features of growing cabbage in the suburbs
In general, agricultural practices in the cultivation of white or cauliflower in the Moscow Region do not differ much from other regions, with the exception of increased demand for light. Since there are not so many sunny days in this area, it is recommended to place plantings in the most open area, without the neighborhood even with undersized shrubs.
Experienced summer residents also call the composition of the soil an equally important point. In the Moscow Region, the lion's share of summer cottages is located on peat bogs, and cabbage, as you know, does not tolerate acidic soil. To avoid problems when growing this crop, it is important to pre-alkalize with lime or dolomite flour. It is important to add these additives in the fall, additionally seasoning the cabbage with organic matter - rotted manure.
The best varieties of cabbage
Since the air humidity in the conditions of the Moscow Region still does not meet the requirements of all types of cabbage, it is recommended to irrigate it regularly, especially in dry periods of summer. This should be done at least 2 times a week.
It is not harder to grow cabbage in the Moscow Region than in other regions. Seasoned summer residents adhere to the rule: do not chase the most large-graded varieties, but select them according to the principle of earlier ripening.
